KOTUKU OIL SPRINGS.
A correspondent writes to the Hokitika Guardian:—Being in the vicinity of Kotuku last week I took the opportunity of visiting the Petroleum District, —accompanied by Mr Molloy, whoso homestead is within a mile of a small creek where the oil is found. There are half a dozen small pot holes sunk about 2ft deep down to water level, about 12ft back from the creek, and in each of them was a thick scum of oil floating on top of the water, and on jumping on the soft bank of the creek, a flow of oil floats away on the surface of the water. I was informed that even in its present crude state it has gained a high reputation as a lubricant for machinery. A company which secured 510 acres intends to commence boring operations soon; in addition to this several other parties have secured about 800 acres. It they succeed in “Striking He,” it may rival the dredging boom. Kotuku railway station on the Jacksons line, is 21 miles from Greyraouth, and about a mile from the Oil Creek, all flat country.
