GREY BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The members of the Borough Council met yesterday Present, Messrs Petrie (chairt, GiesekiAg, Sheedy, Joyce, Bigneil, O'Kane, Steer and M'Lean, when the following official circular was read: — To all Mayors, Chairman of County Councils, Chairman of Eoad Boards, Town Boards. Archbishop and Bishops and Clergymen of all Panominations throughout the colony :
" I have sent the following circular telegram throughout the colony, and which I forward to you for your information. Shall be glad if you can acquiesce in the suggestions therein contained :
!r Asitis difficult in a scattered community to obtain unanmity of action in connection with the lamented death of our late beloved Queen, the Government suggest that the fo'lowing be adopted : The public to b) respectfully invited to observe a close day of mourning on the occasion of the funeral of the Qieen.
"A general holiday will be proclaimed throughout'the colony on that day for that purpose. ""Women and girls to wear a band of black ribbon on right arm above the elbow, and men to wear a/ strip of black ribbon in lapel of coat until after the funeral of the Queen,
" Flags on public buildings in addition to being half-mast to have a black streamer a foot above the flag.
"Citizens possessing flags should be requested to arrange them similarly.
" Clergymen to fix next Sunday as a day for a universal mourning service in the different churches throughout the colony,
"J. G. Wahd, "Acting-Premier, " Lyttelton."
After the circular was read, the Town Clerk was instructed to send the following reply:—
" The Acting-Premier, " Wellington. "Your telegram just to hand. Council met and adopted your suggestion, then immediately adjourned for one week out of respect for the death of our beloved Queen. Kindly convey to "the Governor how deeply this Council mourns the loss the whole world has sustained through the death of the Queen. " Matheson, " Mayor." The Council then adjourned without doing any other business.
