New Zealand Contingents. Wellington, This Day. It is ascertained that there are 193 vacancies in the present contingents in South Africa, divided as follows : Second 80; Third, 56; Fourth, 31; Fifth, 26. The men now in camp arc being given the option of joining any of these contingents if they desire. The Colchester Murder. Justice Edwards has granted a Rule Nisi for the issue of the writ of Habeas Corpus in the Lillywhite case. The rule is to bo returnable after the first sitting in banco after a long vacation, which terminates on the 31st inst. A Maori Forger. New Ply.wodth, January 21. A Maori, Joe Williams, with several aliases was sentenced to twelve months. The charges were of victimising two clergymen and tradesmen under false pretences. A charge against the same accused was for forging the Hon, Carroll’s name on a cheque for £6OO. The case was adjourned till the 23th. Abortion. Nelson, This Day. Dr A. J. Lcggatt was committed for trial to-day on an illegal operation charge. A young man, Reuben Snowdon, was also committed for trial on a charge of paying the young women concerned a sum of money For the purpose of procuring (he operation alleged to have been performed. Both accused were admitted to bail.

Visit of the Indian Troops. Wellington, January 21. The Post has it on tho authority of the Acting-Premier for stating that there is no truth in the report published in a Southern paper that the visit of the Indian troops has been cancelled. Ward is advised that the troops will positively visit the colony. Suicide. John McDonald-Russell, an elderly man and a casual laborer, cut his throat in a dozen places yesterday, and also cut the muscles in belli legs. He died at the Hospital this morning, lie lias been suffering from melancholia. Over the Ranges. Correspondent writing from South Westland states that a Tourist has just crossed from the Hermitage to Waiho, South Westland in one day. He describes it as the shortest and by far the most p : cturesquc route across the range. Ho points to the fact that if it was more widely known it would become a regular thoroughfare for tourists in search of scenery surpassing in grandeur the tracks through fine bush country while tho wonderful glaciers and splendid mountain views complete a scene of unusual beauty. The Death of Francis Hamilton. • Nelson, This Day. Francis Hamilton, head of the firm of E. Buxton and Company, Limited., died yesterday morning, aged GO years. Deceased was well known in most parts of tho colony of which he had been a resident for nearly forty years. He was formerly in business in Otago and Groymouth. Nearly twenty years ago ho bought a Nelson business and has resided here since. He had been ailing in health for seven years and was confined to bed for the last three weeks. Deceased was very popular. He was a member of the Nelson Land Board and had just received an appointment to the Board of College of Governors. He was for many years treasurer and a member of the board of managers’ of the Nelson Presbyterian Church, Ho loaves nine sons and four daughters.

Fatal Railway Accident. A young man named Ward, who was injured by a fall of earth at the Quarry on Friday, died on Saturday. Ho received several injuries any of which was suflioient to cause death. An inquest was held at which a verdict of accidental death was returned.

N. Z. University Senate. Wellington, January 21. The recess committee of the University Senate meet at Dunedin on Thursday for the compilation of the matriculation and junior scholarship results, which will probably be announced on the following Monday or Tuesday. The delay of a few days has been caused by a re-arrangement of the French examination consequent on the death of Professor Clark. Sir James Hector, Chancellor of the University, left for Dunedin to-night. The Price of Meat. Wellington. January 21. The retail butchers have advanced the price of meat by one half penny per lb. Amelia Lusidina, charged with bigamy at Clifton, Queensland, has been extradited to Charters Towers. Prevention of Cruelty. Wellington, January 21. At a meeting of the society for the prevention of cruelty to animals it was decided that subscription lists be opened in the Wanganui, Palmerston North, and in Hawkos Bay in order to widen the scope of the societys sphere of action so as include the lists mentioned. An Industrial School Boy. Wellington, January 21, An escapee from the Burnham Industrial School, who had stowed away on a steamer from Lyttelton, was brought before the S.M. Court to-day and ordered to be sent back to the institution and whipped with the birch. The youngster was subsequently placed in a cell in the Police Station but wriggled through the aporture used for passing food to the inmates and quiekly vanished. Railway Change at Greymouth Dunedin, This Day. Mr Cromljio, shftionmasler at Dunedin, lias been promoted District Manager at Greymouth, vice Mr Piper promoted to Wanganui.
