SOUTH PACIFIC FEDERATION.
(BY ELECTRIC TELEGRAPH —COPYRIGHT.)
[PER PRESS ASSOCIATION.]
A Sketch of Future Control.
Received this day at 9 50 a.m. Sydney, This Day. The Daily Telegraph commenting on the deputation from Now Hebrides says : If what is told is true an effort should bo made in the cause of humanity to put a stop to the cruel practices. Federal Ministers should be expected in the colonics to assume the functions of warden of the Pacific. In that way sooner or later they would dcvclope definitely, as the responsible head of a more or less formal federation in the South Pacific Islands with Australia. Referring to Seddon’s communication with Fiji, the Telegraph condemns O’Brien’s attitude. It says it is unpleasant to find a Governor of a Crown Colony interfering with local politics, and it is much worse to find his interference takes a form of open depreciation of responsible government. From our point of view it may be undesirable for Fiji to federate with New Zealand, but it is none of the Governor’s business. He must not meddle in politics.
