THE TANSEY-LAWSON CASE.

[To the Editor.) Sir. —As this case is subjudice, I refrain from commenting upon its merits. One initial step, however, Mr Tansey lias gained. Now as I was down this Coast in 1879 representing one of the largest Engineering firms in New Zealand, Messrs A. and T. Burt of Dunedii, and afterwards digging in Dillmanstown, I may lay claim to knowing a little of the young generation now springing up amongst us. I think, and the general public will agree with .me, that the way in which Mr Patrick Tansey, junr., gave his evidence in Kumara, and the severe cross-examination he stood was an object lesson to any person on this coast. Here was a comparative young man crippled, standing up and undergoing a senes of questions in the cause of truth and justice, which would have shaken some of the most ilblc men in New Zealand. When a man of trained parliamentary experience, legal acumen and subtle brain like Mr Guinness tackles a witness it is time to have your wits about you. Never, however, did the witness waver except on direction of his counsel. A. 11. W.VKKEI.L. Hokitika. [As our correspondent remarks, comment upon the merits of the case is at present unwarranted. For that reason we have cut out a couple of sentences. — Ed, E.S.]
