GOLD DREDGING NOTES.

MrF. Mellish, engineer in charge of the Nelson Creek Dredge, writes to us as follows: —On reading the dredging notes in your issue of to-day, I see that you state the Nelson Creek Dredge is not working satisfactorily, and that alterations will have to be made, this is altogether wrong ; the dredge is working very well indeed, and I’ll wager that there is no dredge on the Coast has got over as much ground in the time she has been working ; a visit to the dredge will satisfy you on that point. The Fairdown Company are understood to be negotiating for the purchase of a dredge. The Wareatea Company purchased in Dunedin a dredge which was originally intended for a southern claim that proved on prospecting to bo not sufficiently payable to justify the directors in putting the dredge to work on it. The dredge is expected to arrive almost ns soon as the pontoons, so there should be little delay in constructing it. The Directors of tho New Scotia Company have appointed Mr Wm. Anncar to the position of mining manager. The directors of the Foley’s Creek Company have decided to got a new claim for tho Company. Messrs Fleming and Wilson aro engaged prospecting a properly on the New River. We all wish the Company good luck in their new claim. The Foley’s Extended are also looking out for a new claim. Messrs Reynolds and M'Bcath have besn instructed by Messrs Cutken Bros, to build the pontoons for tho Ross Day Dawn G. D. Coy. This is the second set of pontoons the firm have been commissioned to build without tenders being invited, a fact which speaks volumes for the engineers’ confidence in them and their work. Tho Greenstone Creek Company are taking special precautions against damage from drifting timber in flood times. Toey have ordered £IOO worth of extra wire rope as additional head gear.
