Another Boer Leader Shot
Boers beaten off at various points
Received, this day, at S 59 a.m. London, January 14. Further particulars relate that the Boers wearing khaki and British bandoliers surprised a sentry at Zuurfontein and got within seven yards of the trenches before being identified. Their leader was unhorsed, but crawled back and was shot dead as he rose. Ha proved to be a member of the Free State Volksraad. 150 Britishers with the utmost gallantry repelled a thousand of the enemy. Lieutenant Freemason with 90 of the Cheshire Mounted Infantry and a few Colonials, were entrenched at Ka'alfontein and came oil' scathless. SOD Boers with two guns vainly shelled flie position and made repeated attempts to rush the trenches, but were splendidly repelled v> ith heavy loss. An explosion of dynamite killed eight and wounded Commandant Haasbrooks and wife, while '.travelling in a wagon between Boormberg and Ventersburg.
