GREY EDUCATION BOARD.
The monthly meeting of the Grey Education Board was held last night. Present :—Messrs Harris (chairman), Byrne, Kettle, M'Carthy, Marshall, Flynn, White and Petrie. The scholarships examinations resulted as folbws ;■— TOWN. Jones (Tctylorville) ... 047 H. E. Hargreaves (Ahaura) 713 Annie Darcy (Ahaura) ... 694 The other candidate 3 were disqualified in accordance with regulations seven of the candidates not obtaining the required number of marks.
The receipts since last meeting were £460 12a 6tl, and expenditure £460 Gs. , The credit balance at the bank was £.55 15s 10d, but against this there were outstanding liabilities of £6l ss. On BuiidL ing account there was a debit balance of E £3l ss. B Mr. Adams, head master of the GreyB mouth school, attended in regard to hotter | relative to scholarship explainirg that he E originally picked out four as best qualiI fied in order as follows—Margaret Gar h, I Peter Clark, Harold Kernataan, and John ' Burnett. He imputed no unfair motives, On motion of Mr. White explanation was accepted. Resolved on motion of Mr. White that the two highest town and two highest country scholarships be awarded. Martha Barnhill having withdrawn from the scholarship, it was resolved that the year's tuition be granted to IT. E. Hargrcave3 for the unallotted tenure. Mr Petric desired to see a like concession to town scholarship, but it was held over.
From the Education Department stating that the Building grant Cor the year he £775. Resolved that the Chairman ho required to go round, inspect, and report upon the schools in the district. ** From the same slating that the Minister is prepared to consider applications for grants from the vote for schools in newly settled districts. Held over till next meeting and until Chairman lias reported upon all schools. From same forwarding copy of circular from Secretary for Education, Melbourne, inviting inspectors and teachers to a Congress to be held at Melbourne on » 23rd January. No action taken, the i Board not being in a position to send L their inspector over to the meeting. W From Miss Kelly, Orwell Creek, stat|T ing that Mrs Frolli had dispensed with her services.—Resolved on motion of Mr .Kettle that subsidy be withdrawn.
From Grcymouth Swimming Club, asking for a subsidy of £2O from Government grant, as school children were being taught and all school children would be admitted free; and,_ further, that special prizes would be offered for competition by them.—Resolved that Club be informed that application had been made to Government, and that the grant obtained would be handed over. From Taylorvillo Committee, forwarding the resignation of Mr Williams, assistant teacher, and recommending that Miss Hall be appointed in his placeAgreed to on motion of Mr Petric, seconded by Mr Flynn. Mr Byrne was appointed a School Commissioner and Mr Kettle, member of High School Board vice. Mr Nancarrow. The application of the Blackball School Committee for a relieving teacher was referred to. the Chairman to report upon.
Miss Kelly was appointed teacher at the' Twelve-Mile School. Mr Petrie reported that, pending the dealing with Scholarship regulations by the Inspectors' Conference, the Committee appointed • had deferred their report upon the subject. The following tenders for Cobdcn School were opened : F. Glecson £477 10 0 Arnott and Seabrook ... 55!) 0 0 Ben Cox 641 5 0 The acceptance of Mr Gleeson's tender was-held over till next inoetiug.
