FIRE IN LEONARD STREET.
About one o’clock this morning, the fire bell signalled “fire somewhere.” The toll “one” seemed the East Ward as the locality where the outbreak had occurred, but the “flare* 'showed the West Ward. It would be well to recollect that the alarms are : Eastward One toll Middle Ward ... Two tolls Westward Three tolls And beyond ... .... Four tolls The lire occurred in a small cottage in Leonard Street, occupied by Mr Peter Stephenson, expressman, who had but recently returned from Christchurch. The flames had a good hold before the alarm was given and most of the articles inside were destroyed - The flames were confined to the one building, the manual getting very quickly to work, while the steamer soon drenched the flame, but the cottage is little better than a mere wreck. There is £IOO insurance, but the loss exceeds this amount. The brigade did their work well and efficiently, but the hose struck us as being decidedly leaky and requiring attention.
