GREY BOROUGH COUNCIL.
A meeting of the Borough Council was held last evening. Present—His Worship the Mayor (Mr A Mathoson), Crs Sheedy, M’Lean, Joyce, and Steer. Letter from the Greymouth Lagoons Dredging Coy, asking that the bond and leases bo cancelled, as prospecting proved that gold did not exist in payable quantities. Agreed to. From the Swimming Club asking that the Council vote them some small sum to help them in defraying the cost of the swimming sheds. His Worship the Mayor pointed out that the Council had no power (• deal with the matter as the baths were outside the Borough. A letter was received from the Department notifying that they had appointed an Inspector of Daries, etc, for the district.— It was resolved to notify Mr Ainsworth that his services would bo dispensed with as from Ist January. The Finance Committe’s report was read and adopted. The debit balance is J 14,246. Steps will be taken next meeting to deal wiih the overdraft.
The Gas Committee’s report was read and received. The Committee reported the works to bo in a satisfactory state, and ordered a few necessary repairs to be effected, The committee recommended the granting of a weeks holidays each year to the workmen. In regard to the application for gas at Victoria Park, it was decided to lay the mam to the gate.
Cr M'Lean moved that the Herbert street bridge be proceeded with at once in accordance with plans drawn up and provided for by the loan. Cr. Joyce seconded, and said the work was one that should be attended to, and he would like to see it proceeded with at once, Cr Steer supported the motion, but was of opinion that all the bridges mentioned in the loan improvements should be proceeded with—Carried.
Letter from Town Band asking for donation towards defraying cost on instruments.—Ecferred to the Finance Committee. Letter from W. Ryan asking the Council to rent one acre of land situated at Preston road. Referred to Works’ Committee. Reports were read from Drs Morice (senr and junr) notifying the Council that diphtheria had broken out in the town. The position of the cases were in Hospital street and Molan’s lane. The following report by the Town Clerk on the matter was then read :
“ I have (lie lionor to report that (lie District Health Ollice has given notice to (he Council of three cases of diphtheria and sore throat, and immediately on receipt of same I gave (he householders notice to completely isolate the premises. It may not ho generally known (hat under the Public Health Act, 1900, the occupier of the house where infectious disease occurs must at once report the outbreak to the District Health Officer, the penalty for neglect being £5. In like manner any medical practitioner must give notice of any infectious cases to the Health Otliccr under a penalty of £l(s or suspension from practice. Any person who fails to comply with any order from the Health Officer as to isolation, etc., is liable to a penalty of £SO for each and every day the offence is allowed to continue. Clause 3:17 of the Municipal Corporation Act, 1900, gives the Council power to carry into effect the provisions of the Public Health Act, 1900, as far as they apply to boroughs. The Health Officer reports that the cases are on a fair way towards recovery.” The Council then adjourned. A special meeting of the above Council was also held at which the Mayor’s resolution asking the Governor to abolish the wards in tho Borough of Greymouth was carried.
