CONCERNING THE GOVERNMENT.

Wellington, January 8. The Government has authorised the purchase of searchlights for defence purposes at Wellington and Lyfctelton. The Cabinet voted a progress payment of 410,000 towards the prosecution of works at the Ohinemuri and of the North Island Main Trunk Line. Messrs Isaacs (of Nelson) and Brown havo been appointed organising Inspectors of the Technical Suhools. The Cabinet decided to appoint Pope of tho Education Department, and Walker, a teacher from Westland, Inspectors of the Industrial schools in Hawke's Bay. Wairarapa.
The Government employees throughout New Zealand have raised a sum of money by shilling subscriptions for the purpose of making a presentation to Baden-Powell. It is being expended on a silver salver of design typical of the Colony, and to cost £3OO.
