A NOVEL DREDGE.
At Lake Mahinapua a dry land dredge is being constructed whose performances will be watched with much interest. This dredge is to be run upon a train line which is the method adopted upon the surf dredges that are working the sea beach sands at Cape Nome. The object in their case was to adopt the working of the dredge to the ever changing tide level. Besides that mentioned there are several novel features on this dredge. The gold-saving tables have « travelling gear to carry the endless screen, thus keeping it clean. It will be interesting to note the difference between the amount of gold obtainable from a table which is travelling and one left standing still. Another feature is the dredge ladder which is adapted to work in a crescent from a centre, thus taking a wide stretch in front of the dredge, thus doing away with the necessity for any lateral motion. The designer of the dredge is Mr James Bishop, the mining engineer, so well known in Greymonth and Brunncr.
