CONFERENCE OF STATE PREMIERS.
(by electric telegraph—copyright.) [per press association.] Sydney, January 7. The Conference of Premiers considered the request of the Imperial authorities to send! further troops to South Africa. Subsequently Sir Wm Lyne despatched the following cable to Mr Chamberlain : “ Meeting Premiers of all states Commonwealth, Much pleased at the expressed high commendation of the Australian soldiers, and unanimously agreed to comply with desire of Imperial Government for further drafts. So far as can be judged will make balance of Australian contingents. Eequire about 2,300 men, 2,500 horses. Can be ready about end of month. Shall be glad to know how long troops engaged for and if pay commences from enlistment Absolutely necessary Imperial Government send transports to convey to South Africa. Very desirable equipments other than horses be found on arrival there. Now Sooth Wales soldiers now there must have the option of returning.”
