WHERE SOVEREIGNS ARE MADE.

The proposal to establish a branch of the Royal Mint in Canada opens up the interesting question of whether it is desirable to establish branches of the Mint in all our gold-producing colonies. There are at present three colonial branches, all in Australia, viz., at Sydney, Melbourne, and Perth. We shall shortly have one in Canada, and the next colony to be considered is our newest possession, the late Transvaal. Already rumours have been set afloat to the effect that a branch of the Mint is to be founded at Pretoria, but they are of course premature, if not wholly erroneous. It is interesting to compare the total output of gold coin from the Mint in London with that issued from the Australian Mints. According to the returns for 1899 the London Mint issued gold coins to the value of £8,520,311; at Sydney, sovereigns and half-sovereigns to the tune of £3,324,000 were coined; at Melbourne, £5,627,757; and at Perth, £B9l, 708. It will be seen that the Tower-hill establishment thus mints about half the total Englisn gold coinage.
