It was too terrible. ‘Tell me,’ she cried, while she clenched her tiny fists in agony and gazed into the dreamy eyes with dread. ‘Tell me, I beseech you tell me, why you have changed towards me?’ ‘Ah,’ he said and the tears from her : liquid eyes fell softly on Ins doublet. ‘I dare not kiss thee because’-—and then lie paused again. ‘Go on.’ ‘Because I have been eating’ ‘Ob, heavens! what?’ ‘Garlic.’ And then over her face came a seraphic smile and while he drew her to bis heart she whispered: •I have been eating Spring onions myself.’ He did not faint. For her sake he will live.
