Great excitement over the tHuit “taring” ease. Tlie purchase of the hand-cuff* has been traced to the accused Walden, and further revelations are expected at the next hearing. Mr Travers, Council for the prosecution, stated that lie intended to call the Hon. P. A. Buckley, in whose service it was stated the accused was prior to the assault.
The Tongairiro arrived at Port. Chalmers last night, being some days overdue which is accounted for by her having broken her shaft tlie day after leaving Teneriffe. Messrs Fell and Dobson, tlie Railway' Delegates, are passengers by' her.
The Public Works Estimates have been cut down right, and left, and not only' tlie West Coast Railway eliminated, but other important works will have to stand over for an indefinite period. Tlie efforts of the Canterbury' and Nelson members appear to bav6 been directed 10 the stoppage of all other works when they' found their own little turn conjd not be served. Whether tlii s is a wise po’icy to pursue is of course ‘quod est demon..trandum.’
