MELBOURNE

Sept 15th

Advices received from Wilson’s Promontory, stating that Captain Thomson ot Greenock steamer, Gulf of Carpentaria, 1596'tons, arrived with three boats belonging to the vessel. He reports that his vessel, bound from Newcastle to London via Adelaide, while off Cleft (sic ?) Island struck upon some rocks not marked upon tlie Chart. The vessel became a total wreck, sinking in thirty fathoms of water

within three hours after striking. Crew took to the boats and landed at Wilson’s Promontory. No lives lost.
