Folding Athletic Sports.
The t went} 7 - second annual meeting under tho auspices of the FeildlDg Athletic Club was held on the Oval yesterday, hut the weather was very unfavorable, The morning broke with an easterly wiud aud a cloudy sky ; towards midday a slight rain comrurucod to fall and after continuing for about an hour " Old Sol " shone out aud dispersed the clouds. When the raiu commenced quito a number of persons lett the grounds, but many took shelter from the elements under tho trees on tho lawn. After no many weeks of hot, dry weather, this sudden change to biting cold ! considerably affected the attendance, j which was fully six or seven hundred less than it otherwise would have been. I However, about 1700 or 1800 persons ' attended to witness these popular sports, ! and so far as *port was concerned they ; were not disappointed, the acceptances I j in almost every caso being large and the j j nuisbes close and interesting. In addi i tiou to the very unfavorable weather, ' the absence of cyoliug events from the programme detraoied to aonio extent from the interest of what would have i been the best gathering which haw yet beta held under the auspices of the club. The hero of the raeetius: was P. Pureell, of Wauganui, who secured three firsts and a sccoud prize, thus securing the points prize with 18 points, in which J. L. Lord, with two wius to his credit, was second. In tho Manchester Handicap, the " big money " of the meeting, A. C. Foster, a local runner who should yet be further heard of on the track, ran a well judged race aud won comfortably from 65 yards in 4mins 40secs. In the mile walk, A. E. Foster, another Feilding athlete, secured a victory. Although the finishes in every case were close, yet the re-sults have proved that the limits were too great for the scratch men, who in two cases only won the first prize. The winners, in most cases, started from marks well on towards the limits and are chiefly men who have previously won from advanced handicap marks- On the whole, the handicapper, Mr G. Watson, may feel gratified at the results of his efforts. The starting was all that could be desired, Mr C. Bray, junr., who appeared as starter for thig j Club for the first time, getting the " fields " away well together, not a complain: being heard in regard to this important factor in races, particularly "sprints." Tho courteous secretary, Mr H. L. Shernill, was attentive to his duties and was ably assisted by W. G. Haybittle, as treasurer. Mr W. A. L | Bailey, as conductor of the sports, kept event 3 well up to time; the jud*es of the running and walking events were Messrs W. A. L. Bailey, E. Goodbehere, R H Whisker ; judges of jumping evants Messrs B Gosling and W. Reid ; Messrs R H Whisker, and <jt tl Say wed handi* capped the boys races ; Mr J Scott acted as timekeeper and assistance was | rendered iv various waya by the followin" coinruitteenien in addition to the j above named gentlemen : — Messrs E H Fisher, G Kirton, F V Lethbridge, iM.H.R ), and I- 1 Thomson. The com aiitteu were not called on to decide any protests during the day and every event was got off without any unpleasantness. During the day the Feilding Brass Band enlivened the proceedings.
