At a Bowling Tournament.
Did ye ever attend a bowlin 1 tournament ? If not, don't go near ane, far yell ne'er get the better of. I wanner t in tae ane tbe ither day, an' biv never got what you micht ca* a goirf nicht's rest since.
I got completely arsorbit in the gemm afore I wis ten meenits in iie green enclosure. Aboot a bnnner dacent, reepectable men were throwin round black ba's np tae try an' lie besides a wee white ane, an' seemed ta git ijnite ex« cited at whit appeared tae m<» a very easy task. It seemed tae be a «rarm job, for t bey had a' their jackets aff; in fac', some o' them had tbeir sleeves row'd op.
The supporters o' the players were excited tae, an' kept tellin' tbeir mci whit tae dae tae reach the weti bool.
" Tak' plenty green, Jamie, Mid ane ; bat I did'na see Jamie tak' ony green, fur the turf was the same after be played aa before.
" Be np, Andra," I heard anither say, but Andra didna heed 'im, fur be simply curled away bis bool, and it went intae a ditch at the itber end a' the green. The supporters said this was puir play, but I thoeht it was the best I bad aeen, for he was the only player who seethed to be able tae throw bis ba' intae the ditch.
Jamie was then told to tak* the back ban', bit he wis wiser than his supporters, for he jist fired awa in front o' trim an* as I heard them say, " kissed" the jack. A gey puir smack it wis, tho', an' no' like the kisses I am accustomed tae.
Andra then cad the jack oot o' its place, au' " Well done, an* a toucher," rent the air. I tbocht it wis very nnfair o' Andra tae dae this whin Jamie had struck the mark sac weel, bis it seem that's the gemm.
Efter tbrowin' the bool back an' forrit for an 'oor or sac thegeiam ended, an' Jamie wis declared the vinaer by three shots. He wis prood, p rood o' his victory, an' there wis han'uhakin' a* roon.
They tel't me efter (at the pavilion) that Jamie had won bis tie, an' wis in the final. I said I wis gled o' that. Ye see, it wis Jamie's " roon," an'lcouldna go against the man at that critical moment.
As it wis, we had drinks a' roon, an* I wia askit tae become a bowler, an' as they were dacent fellas, I agreed, an* they drunk ma health,
Am oot on the green every nicht, noo that the tournament is owre and which Jamie won), an' the only thing that bothers me noo is boo tae keep the bools ooto' the ditch— the laßt rlaoe, they say, that ony booler wid thing o' aendin* his bools in tae - although, in ma ignorance. I aince thought it wis the place tae pit them when ye wem tell't tae lie " up."
Wi' s little practice I should be ready tor nexfc rear* toarnttaeattt. where I hope tae mak' a name for nuiatT.— The Bailie.
