The I'ohaugina County Council meets on Saturday next.

A meeting of the Directors of the Feild ing Building Society will be held onMon day next.

The Committee of the Feilding Cycling Club will meet in the Boys' Club at 7.30 on Monday evening next.

Great preparations were being made for the dance at Guy's Hall iv Apiti last evening (Friday), particular* of which will appear in a future issue.

The Apiti Cheese Factory commenced operations on Monday last, bat there are not many milk suppliers just yet as the feed is somewhat scarce. It is anticipated that it will bo another fortnight before the factory is in full work.

Mr G. Adams, the oldest local preacher in connection with the Primitive Methodist Church in this district, will deliver a farewell sermon in Rongotea Church tomorrow morning and in the evening he will conduct ft farewell service, in the Feilding Church. All his old friends are invited to be present.

Mr J. H. Fry, of Mnkino, reports that the rainfall for September of this year was 2*26 inches ; the average rainfall during the month of September for the past nine years was i 5 -98 inches. There were 21 rainy days the average rainy days for the before mentioned month for the past nine years being 19.

Instead of " beating tho air" in attempting to get a training ship for " our boys " it would be much better if they were taught to milk cows. The dairy industry is assuming such large proportions that in the near future we may hope to see as many young men employed as milkers, as there arc at the present time as sheep shearers.

Mrs Little notifies to-day that she may be consulted every Thursday during October at Mrs Coppen'fs, Feilding, from one o'clock until eight o'clock, and will give delineations of character from writing, photos and faces. Mrs Little has practised the science of graphiology for ninny years nnd is now conducting the graphiological columns in several papers in the colony.

The divorce suit, Mnulo v. Maulo. whs before the Supreme Court. Wellington, yesterday, when the application was made on behalf of the respondent I Mrs Maulo) to dismiss the suit for want of prosecution. The Judge ordered the suit to stand dismissed unless the next step was taken within 21 days, nnd ho also ordered the petitioner to pay the taxed costs of the suit.

Mr Crabb, the temperance lecturer, who is also a very able preacher, will preach in the Primitive Methodist Church to-morrow morning and in the Cheltenham Hall in the afternoon. In the evening he will conduct a special service in the Colyton Church when he will speak on " " Scripture Temperance Teaching." He will also deliver a lecture in the Cheltenham Hall on Monday evening. The lecture will be splendidly illustrated by special lantern views.

We have beard tbat workmen are ratber eoarce in the Apiti district. Numbers of enquiries bave been made lately for bush hands, but there are none to be got. It appears tbat a quantity of bush is being felled in the district this season, and as there are a number of road contracts also being executed all tbe available labour hands are engaged. A contractor is advertising in our wanted columns for two good busbmen. Particulars may be obtained on application at Mr Darragh'a store, Apiti.

The sub-committee appointed by the Shooting Committee of the Manchester Rifles have been drawn up the following regulation for the purchase of ammunition at 6d per packet : — That purchases be limited to 30 rounds at a time ; that ammunition shall be purchased after parade ; that the ammunition be expended at target practice on Feilding range only ; any break whatever of the above rules the offending member forfeits the privilege of purchasing ammunition at half price, during the season.

Two runaway horses attached to a brake caused a little excitement in Feilding about noon to-day. They came down Kimbolton road, went along Manchester street, Fergusson street and were stopped in Stafford street opposite the Court House by Messrs J. Newton and J. Bellve the former catching the horses by the head and the latter getting into the vehicle and putting on the break. Before stopped the runaway team collided with Mr Ci. Martin's trap, breaking a shaft, and nearly ran into several other vehicles in the streets.

It is with regret that we learn from the Herald of the sudden death of Mr Luni Xgalavia. which took place on Wednesday at Mr A. J. Symcs' Knilwifarm. Mr Xgalavia lias been a settler in this and the Kangitikci district, with the exception of a few years' absence .it D'Urville Island, for the last 30 years, having arrived bore from Fiji when only about 12 years of ago. The deceased was at one time a prominent athlete, and was particularly well known in footeall circles. His cheerfulness and good humour made him a general favourite, and his many friends will miss his hearty laugh and genial companionship. (He used to play football in the old days in Feilding).

A startling message is sent from New York by the correspondent of the Daily Ma.il to the effect that, largely as a result of rorluci'd wages, over production, and ■^enoriil business depressions, nearly all the iron and steel mills, tin plate niilla, and window glass factories in the United Status are closed, leaving nearly 100,000 nun idle. The quarterly meeting of tbe Wesleyan Church in the Birmingham circuit, w as held at Apiti on Thursday last and •as presided over by the Rev Mr Aber»'tliy. of the Feilding Sandon circuit. Ihe Rev Mr Griffin, miuiater of tbe ircuit, and the officials representing Kaugiwahia, Birmingham and Apiti were prest-nt. The income for the quarter was on the credit side of the ledger, •.vhicu was very encouraging, and it is auticipated that in the coming quarter a considerable amount of the deficiency on previous quarters will be paid off besides meeting current expenses. After the usual business had boeu transacted there was a social given in the church followed by a coffee supper. Mr F. S. Guy has decided to start eawmilling operation* in Apiti. He has purchased a quantity of machinery and expects to have tbe mill in full working order id about a month. As tbis is a rapidly growing district we anticipate that the owner will be kept busy executing orders.

The U.F.C.A., with their usual enterprise, have an extensive selection of cricket and lawn tennis material, and lawn mowers on hand, while the groceries department is replete with all the requirements of the trade. As specialties for farmers they have a largo stock of woolpacks and shearing requisites, manures and seeds of all descriptions. They are also agents for Lawe's sheep dip.

Tho usual fortnightly mooting of Oddfellows was held in the Foresters' Hall. Bowen street, last evening, when there was a fair attendance of members present. A good deal of routine business was transacted. The members decided to take part in the Band Demonstration and attend the entertainment in a body, on Friday evening next, the members to wear regalia, when it is expected there will be a large gathering of the brethren.
