Manchester Road Board.

The following is a continuation of yesterday's report : — I From W. Andrew, chairman of the | Bunnytborpe Scbool Committee, asking that a small culvert be placed across the road opposite tbe scbool. — Engineer instructed to place culvert as requested From Gartner Bros., asking to have fines for non -completion of contract remitted as tbe delay was not caused by their neglect. — No action taken, the fine, therefore, being enforced. From Department of Lands and Survey, re Onepubi bridge proposed £1000 loan which tbe Rangitikei County Council bad applied for. I From Department of Lands and Survey, approving of boundaries of tbe new subdivision of tbe district (No. 7 ward.) From J. W. Marshall, Chairman Rangitikei Couaty Council, stating he had interviewed Mr Howard, of Westoe, with reference to acquiring the necessary land to make a road to give access to tbe Kakanki bridge. Mr Howard was willing to sell providing full compensation was paid. As Boon as he (Mr Marshall) received a statement of tbe claim ho would furnish this Board with a copy. Also, enclosing copy of agree mant between tbe Manchester Road Board and Rangitikei County Council with reference to the Kakariki bridge, agreeing to tbe offer of the Minister of Railways to erect a combined road and railway bridge, providing that the local bodies paid £150 a year for wages of gate keeper and cost of maintenance; each local body to pay one half cost of making road to bridge and cost of maintenance of bridge. Mr Wheeler reported that a deputation from this Board had met tbe Rangitikei County Council with reference to the proposed Kakariki railway and road bridge. The Minister of Railways estimated tbe extra cost at £2300 to make a road and railway bridge combined and agreed to construct it providing the local bodies paid £50 a year towards cost of maintenance and £100 for caretaker. This Board's share would be ±75 a year and considering they paid from £120 to £140 a year for repairs to Onepubi bridge they thought the present proposal would be tbe better for tbein. It was intended to place a light swing bridge at Oriepnbi to carry passengers or enable a hoT»e to bfc led over, at a cost of £80 or £90. The estimated cost of roads to connect with tbe Kakariki bridge was about £400 on the Manchester side and about £600 on tbe Raugitikei side. Mr Gardener waited on the Board with reference to Mr Cotter's gates— ln tbe absence of tbe chairman, who had been instructed to write to Mr Cotter on tbe matter, the Board were unable to state what had been donesiuce last meeting. At this stage of the business Messrs Purkiss and Letbbridge took their seats in the meeting. With reference to Mr Gardener's application, Mr Letbbridee stated he bad written to Mr Cotter who agreed to pay for grazing and asked tobe allowed to leave a gate near bis residence. Mr Rumble was instructed to interview Mr Cotter and ask for permission for Gardener Bros, to use " spur " so as to avoid a swamp, Mr Cotter evidently having misunderstood tbe chairman's letter. Resolved, That the secretary write a letter of thanks to thoße settlers — namely, Messrs Parr, Dixon and Matbeson — who allowed the road to go through their properties while the grade on Proctor's Hill was being lowered. Resolved, oh tbe motion of Mr Thomas and seconded by Mr Purkiss, That this Board approve of the action of tbe combined meeting of tbe Manchester Road Board and Rangitikei County Council re Kakariki bridge. Resolved, That tbe piece of road opposite tbe Commercial Hotel, Ashurst, be completed ou guarantee of 30s as part payment by the residents of Ashnrst and the matter bo left with tbe Engineer for completionResolved, That the Engineer be instructed to inspect tbe culvert complained of by Mr Malone on tbe Makino road and have the necessary work done. Resolved, That the boles on tbe Pohangina road be filled in No. 7 ward. Proposed by Mr Pearce, seconded by Mr Purkiss, That the Feilding- Ashurst and Feilding-Bunnythorpe-Ashurst road be closed for heavy traffic as defined by clause 180 of the Public Works Amendment Act, 1884.— Carried. Accounts were passed for payment and tbe meeting adjourned.
