Apiti Notes

fPBOM OtTB OWN COBBBSPONDENT"]. A littlo girl, the daughter of Mr T. Thompson of the Main Ridge road, met with a very painful accidont a few days ; ago. The child fell and a piece of wood j entered the abdomen. The parents took \ the little sufferer to Fowlers and placed I her under Dr Mussen's care. According i to latest reports she is progressing as favourably as can be expected. Another little girl, the daughter of MrH. F.Rich- j ards of this place fell on a broken bottle I and received a nasty cut on her wrist. { There was a heavy fall of snow here i on Sunday night the 6th instant. Ihe ! ground was covered all day on Monday. I The children— some of them a bit mature — had fine fun snow balling. Some of the grown up children thought every one passing along the road was fair game for them. A number of nhootists have been visiting Apiti lately, some of them being from Raugitikei, and have been making wholesale slaughter amongst the pigeons. Pheasants are not very plentiful. A meeting is convened to be held in Guy's Hall on Monday (this evening) next to take into consideration the ques tion of celebrating the Record Reign. j The " bush-whackers " have commenced operations. Up to the present I have not heard of much bush being felled this season. The road contractors— es pectally for metalling have had to " give it best " as they term it on account of the wet weather. The widening of the Apiti Norscwood road ha.s not improved it for traffic. Some portions of this road, prior to widening the same, was in a fairly passable state, but vow it is a regular " slough of despond." The settlers who have to wade through this " muck " are complaining bitterly. A number of the settlers on this road requested tho Council to spend what money was allocated in niolalling or makiDg the portions of tho road which were alino.st impassable in winter and leaving tho other portions of the road until such time as the ward was in funds to pro < cecd with the improvements, but it appears that wiser coudssls prevailed with the result as aforesaid. The anniversary tea meeting of the Wesleyan Church will be held on Wednesday next. Great preparations are being made and it is anticipated that a successful meeting will be the result. Three services were held on Sunday (yesterday). The Rev. Grifiiu con ducted. Mr W. Starr, bootmaker, of this place, who wa3 burnt out a short time ago, ia getting timber on the ground to rebuild.
