Pohangina Notes.
Mr A. H. Gray, of Feilding road, Ashnrst, has let 400 acres of bush to bo felled on his Pohangiua property. Messrs Bartholomew Bros, are bringiog logs iuto their mill yard by waggon, theiv tramway and bridges being completely destroyed. It is surprising to see the number of young men who come to Ashurst on Saturdays from the Upper Pohangina. Busbfelling, fencing, road-making, sawmilling, logging up, and general farmwork gives employment to scores of the able-bodied. Messrs Kicumer and Craven take up on an average three loads of stores per week to feed tlje above-named. There is only one ford to cross now, to reach the higher latitudes. That bad ford at the bluff was siltod up at tbo last fresh. The river now flows chains away, leaving'a newly metalled road where the old course was. There are places on the river bed where it has the appearance of a newly felled aroa of bush, from the number of green totaras that were stranded there from the neighboring roserves when they were undermined. Timber from the Victoria mill on the Pohangina road is being now carted to Ashnrst for tho new English Church. There is plenty of game in our district —but rather shy. ■ Mr J. Maunder Las removed Mr : Adsett's house from near where our first Pohangina school stood, to the other side of the river, and erected it on Mr 11. Port's section in the Awahou block. The same builder has finished a bouse for Mr Arthur and will shortly make additions to Mr Holley's residence. We are glad to be having better ac--1 commodation for our day scholars at Awahou school—they attend very regularly.—Standard.
