Land-Tax Assessment.
(Per Press Association.) Hastings, April 29. Captain Russell wrote and wired to the Hon. John McKenzie asking the department to grant a month's extension at least for tax returns, giving ratepayers time to amend. A reply was received to night: — "I am much obliged for your wire ro tax. returns. Present returns are only being sent in by taxpayers, and I am of opinion that the great bulk of those who have suffered by the floods are small people. Their valuations will be rectified when the general valuation is made presently. The difficulty of making an all round concession i:; a le?al one. As the returns have to be made as on the 21st March (the damage by tho iloods beiug subsequent to thaij.date) all the department am do is to acb'ept objections from those affected and obtain a repoit thereon from a competent man. Will arrange that this is done, and meantime owners can have au extra month for making returns and framing objections. If you would be so kind as to communicate the substance of your message and mine to tho newspapers, I think the difficulty will be met, -John McKe.nzie, Welling, ton."
