Light Railways.
Q (Per Press Association.) G immune. April iiO. A lan,'o ancl reprrsintitive njcetiug ot town n: d-conntry settlers was held this afternoon to consider (lie Hon. Mr Carroll's memorandum to she Premier on the question of connecting this district with Auckland by means of a light rails way. There was a strong feeling that the matter should be pressed forward with all vigor. It was pointed out that this district has long remained in an isoK ated backward state, receiving no fair return of the moneys paid into the public trsasury ; that as a matter of urgency the settlers should have an outlet to a market for their Btock ; that the construction of a line to Eotorua should be a matter of no great difficulty, a light railway being cheaper than a road, and the estimated cost not more than £.1.000 a mile ; that such railway would open vast areas of fino country, which must remain in a state of nature until come means of access ore given to it, and of which the Crown holds a title to close on 200,000 acres ; that the line would draw a (large tourist traffic past the magnificent scene of the Wftikaremoona Lake ; that as tho kauri forests in the north are being worked out this line would open tip a huge area of fine timber country ; and generally that it would be greatly to the advancement and welfare of the North Island. It was unanimously resolved to form a Railway League and a strong committee was appointed to gather information and promote the object in view.
