Feilding Borough Council
The ordinary monthly meeting of tho Feilding Borough "Council was held last evening. Present — The Mayor (Mr W. A. L. Bailey), Crs W. Reid, W. G. Baybittle, J. Brarawell, W. G. Shearor, P. Thomson, Gk H. 3aywell, G. W. Fowles, J. Gould. Correspondence was received and Jealt with as follows : — From S. Sidet, complaining that jhe Council did not put metal on road ;o fill up ruts, opposite his property. — Referred to Public Works Committee Lo report. From Goodbehere and Eichmond, solicitors, requesting the Council's permission to transfer of right-of-way at rear of section in Manchester Street purchased by Mrs Woollains from Mrs Maouthur. — Consent of Council granted. From Finance Committee a report, recommending accounts amounting to £163 6s lOd be passed for payment. — Adopted From Secretary Hospital and Charitable Aid Board, stating a levy of 5s 4d in the £1000 had been made for the year commencing April 1 ; that this Council's share was £71 2a 3d, and asking that this amount be paid at an early date. Froro J. H. Stevens, chairman Public Library, drawing attention to the absence of glass in the fan light over door at the back entrance, the d' aught interfering with lighting and comfort of visitors ; also, that the gate fastening was out of repair. — Fan light to be completed and gate to be attended to. From H. M. Murray, forwarding 1.5s 3d collected at Mr Gaustad's lecture on behalf of the Indian famine relief fund. — Returned to Mr Murray with a suggestion that amount should be forwarded to some district where a fund was started. From Miss Constance Washbourn, requesting reduction of rates for section 169 S, as the house had been unoccupied for upwards of six months. — Rebate granted. From Manager of Bank of Australasia re overdraft. Froro J. S. Palmer and J. Bradley requesting alteration of names on rate roll from former to latter for sections 28D, 302, 303, 288. — Alteration agreed to. From A. H. Truebridge, for Gaa Light and Power Co., offering to import lanterns and suggesting square lanterns 16in wide at a cost of 34s 6d, carriage and duty extra. Also, an extra brilliant lamp for Square. From Public Trustee, stating J. C. Thompson had purchased sections 70, 390, and 562 in the estate of the late F. J. Knox. From Hospital and Charitable Aid Bo*rd, voucher for £46 0s lOd, refund of this Council's expenditure on charitable aid. From Helen E. Taylor, requesting that a portion of Pharazyn street leading to her section be metalled, a distance of three or four chains. — Work to be proceeded with as aoon aa possible. From R. F. Haybittle, conductor of Feilding Brass Band, requesting that a gate be placed iv fence around enclosure in square, on which the Band Rotunda is situated Resolved that a gate be erected on south-west corner. From Eeck, complaining that ho had been short paid 5s 9d for labor. From Inspector of Nuisances, a report. From H. L Sherwill, secretary Feilding Club, requesting footpath be made opposite club property. From MrsE. S. Belfit, asking to have footpaths formed and metalled opposite sections in Beattie and Stafford streets. From Mrs M. L. L, Macarthur and Mrs M. E. J. Woollams requesting change of name on rate roll from former to latter for 18ft frontage, part section 122. — Alteration agreed to From Cr Goodbehere, apologising for unavoidable absence. -^-Leave of absence granted. From Public Works committee re* commending that the ditch in Queen street be filled in and a water table formed in its place and a I6ia pipe culvert put across road at the place recommended by Mr Bray some time ago ; the cost of material would not exceed £o and the labor to bo done by roadmen. Alto, that it was necessary to put longitudinal planking on Beattie street bridge at once as the old decking was so thin that it waa dangerous. Also, That two gallons ot Holden's weed destroyer be purchased as an experiment in killing grass on footpath. — Adopted. Resolved that H. L. Sherwill's application on behalf of the Feilding Club and, also, Mrs E. S. Belfit's for construction and kerbing footpaths opposite their respective premises, be granted on the usual terms. The Mayor read an estimate of receipts and expenditure for the year ended March 31, 18S8The Finance Committee reported that the accounts for the licensing committee totalled £64 Is 3d, the Mayor remarking that accounts to the amount of about ,£3O were yet to come in. Crs took exception to. a number of the charges which they considered exorbitant ; the Mayor, stated the charges of the returning officer at Sandon Block was £8 9s 6d for five days, and four votes only were registered there. Several other accounts were, also, objected to. Proposed by Cr Haybittle and seconded by Cr Gould, That the account of costs for licensing election be referred back to the Registrar, some of the accounts being extortionate — Carried. Proposed by Cr Haybittle, seconded by Cr Gould, That the estimates as read be adopted, and that public notice be given that it is the intention of the Council at a meeting to be held on the 6th day of May to make 4 general rate of Is 3d in the £ and a library rate of Id in the £ on the rateable value of all the rateable property within the borough of Feilding for the financial year ending 31st March, 189^, such rates to be payable [n ono sum on May next. — LJarried. Resolved, That the Mayor and Cr Uoodbehere arrange with the bank for overdraft up to the legal limit for the pear ending March 31, 1898; that a cheque be given for balance due on 31st March 1897, and that the Mayor, L"rs Goodbehere, Brauawell and Say*
veil be authorised to sign cheques. Resolved, That tenders be called for the supply of metal for niainten ance. The following tenders were received : — Trimming and metalling 40 chains West Street — E. Charles, £1 7s Gd per chain (accepted) ; J, Belfit, £1 8s 9d per chain. Trimming and metalling Arnot Street- J. Belfit, £1 7s 9d per chain (accepted) ; E. Charles, £1 15s. Proposed by Cr Fowles seconded by Cr Saywell, That Mr Truebridge be authorised to procure twenty street lanterns, copper, with regulators and corks complete for 34s 6d, and one large lamp for three burners at £-i. — Carried. The Council then adjourned. [With reference to the charges for the Licensing Election, certain modifications in the accounts have since been made, and the several amounts passed for payment.]
