Ransiwahia Sports.
The fifth annual meeting of the Rangiwuhiaßports was held the in .Recreation Reserve yesterday. The weather was beautifully line and the attendance very good, between four and five hundred persons being present. The several events were got; off well up to time, the last event being concluded before 5-30, the various officials working hard to make the sports the success they undoubtedly were. The energetic and courteous secretary and treasurer, Mr VV. F. Stanaell, was very attentive to hig duties and it wag to his efforts to a great extent the ' success of the gathering was due. Mr Stansell was ably assisted by Mr R. | Mitchell, the assistant secretary. Messrs 1 F. Pemberton, H. A. Ruscoe, and F. ' Ross acted as judges of the running events ; J. D. McGregor and P. J. Moran as judges of the jumping; judging horse eveatß, Messrs J. Burke, Haycock, and F. 1 Rusicoe ; judges of wrestling, Mesers T. 1 Wood and Ahlers. Mr C. Cleaver made 1 a very successful starter, while Mr R. Craig's handicapping resulted in Boma 1 very close finishes. Messrs J. J. Bryce and .S Stesdman also lent valuable assis--1 tance in various ways. There was not a single protest or mishap to mar the 1 pleasure of the gathering, and the com--1 iniuee are to ba congratulated on the ' success of the meeting. The Apiti brass band under the conductorship of Mr E. In the evening n concert wns held in the hall, when about two hundred persons were present. The programme was contributed to as follows :— overture, Messrs J. Curreen (cornet), E. Curreen (violin), Hargreaves (piano) ; Mr A. Matheson, the songs ' The sleeping camp ' and ' King Davey,' the latter being encored ' Vanity ' was eiven in response; Mr Matheson's singing was very much admired ; Miss Laing sang • Whisper and I ahall hear ' and ' The dear old home ' in her usual manner, being encored for both items she gave ' If the waters could speak as they flow' and 'Coming thro 1 the ryo'; Mr Mr Ahlers sang two comic songs, which "caught on" immensely and he had to respond to encores in each case ; Miss Dobaon sang ' Three leaves of shamrock ' and another song; Mr Tolley sang 'Comrades'; Mr Lay sang 'Anchored' and ' The Arab's farewell to his steed'; Mr Craig sang ' True till death ' and ' Off to Philadelphia ' ; Mr Dillon gave a song without instrumental accompaniment and it was anything but a success, however, he was "barracked" into givipg an encore piece, by a portion af the audience ; Mrs Hancock sang 'Barney O Hay ' ; Mr J. D. McGregor sang ' Marguerette ' ; the gem of the evening was the cornet solo ' Woodman spare that tree ' and the encore piece a selection from the opera " Martha " by Mr J. Curreen. The accompaniments were played by Mr Hargreaves, Mrs J. J. Bryce, and Miss McGregor. On the whole the concert was yery successful. At the conclusion of the concert a dance was well patronised. The music was supplied by Messrs Hargreaves (piano) J. Curreen ! (cornet) and E. Curreen (violin). The dancing was kept up with vigor to a late hour this morning. Votes of thanks were accorded to all those who assisted at the concert on the motion of the chairman, MrF. Pemberton.
