Cable Messages.

o (Per Press Association) Wakapuaka, February 27. The Eastern Extension Cable Com. pany has fitted up one of the cables between Wakapuaka and La Perouse with duplex instruments at a cost of over £3000. Tbis step has been rendered necessary by tbe steady increase of cable work which has taken place during the last few months and the new de parture will greatly facilitate the transmission of all classes of messages between Australia and New Zealand. The set of instruments for the Waka-* puaka end arrived from Englaud a few weeks ago and are of magnificent work, manship and finish. They were fitted up by Mr W. W. Browning, Superintendent of the Company, and Mr Stowe, clerk in Charge, and the tests from both ends being satisfactory, the new Bystem was brought into full working order last week. The unusually smart receipt of tbe Press Association's racing messages from Melbourne yesterday was partly due to the use of the duplex system. Tbe work of the Cable Company in New Zealand has been steadly increasing of late, and other improvements in connection with the Wakapuaka station are contemplated in tbe near future. The work of the Government Telegraph office here bas also correspondingly increased, which has necessitated an addition to the staff.
