(Per Press Association.) Wellington, February 6. Colonel Penton leaves for the South next week on his first visit of inspection of the forts and forces there. Dunedin, February 7. George Titlove, a goldminer, aged 60, was found dead in a but at Hindoo on Friday night. He had evidently been dead some days. Auckland, February 6. A man named James Mulpran was found lying dead on the road near Katikati. He had evidently been kicked by a horse. The balance of the amateurs for tbe championship meeting arrived to-day, and great interest is being taken in the contest for tbe banner. The meeting opens on Wednesday. A half-caste named Charles Johnston, aged 15 year*, was drowned in the Wairoa river at Tauranga yesterday whilst trying to take a horse across. This is one of the results of the late gale, as part of the Wairoa bridge was carried away, and, so far, has not been replaced. The Tauranga County authorities esti mate the damage by the late gale at LltfOO. It is reckoned that other losses have yet to be reported. Chbistchurch, February 7. Yesterday afternoon a rink from the Canterbury Bowlin? Club, with W. Thomson skip, played the Danedin rink, J. Hunter skip, for the bowls won by the South Island team in the Wellington tournament interclub matches. Canterbury won by 19 to 14. Gisbobne, This Day. A five-roomed house at Waerengaabika has been destroyed by fire, Mrs Wren, who owned the property, loses over £200, and it was not insured. Incendiarism is strongly suspected. Napieb, This Day. A twenty-two roomed house in Market Street, Hastings, owned and occupied by Hickey, and used as a boardinghouse, was destroyed by fire early this morning. Insurances — South British £600; Norwich Union £300; North German £40. An inquest on Herman Brickett returned a verdict that death resulted from taking carbolic oil in mistake for medicine.
