(Per Press Association.) Melbourne, This Day. At the inquest on Hurst, a verdict was returned in accordance with tbe medical evidence, which showed that death was due to syncope, the result of wounds accidentally inflicted on himself. Mrs Hurst was discharged from custody. Heavy rains have put Gippaland rivers in high flood. There has been great destruction to the maize, hops, and potato crops. Railway and telegraph communications are interfered with. Thursday Island. This Day. Mr Cockburn, manager of the mining battery at Horn Island, was twice shot by a man named Harris, who afterwards shot himself. Mr Cockbura was not seriously hurt, but Harris cannot recover. Harris was recently discharged for drunkenness.
