Birmingham Caledonian Society Sports.
Tho Birmingham Caledonian Society held their fifth annual gathering yesterday. Tho weather was not so favorable as might have been desired, there being a heavy wind blowiug throughout tho day. There wa.s, however, a very good attendance, about four hundred persons being present, including a good number i of ladies. Tho sports afforded a pleasur- ; able outing beiug well conducted through out, the several events being got off promptly to timo, a fact which was | much appreciated by the public and i competitors. The officials all worked hard to make the gathering a success. Jlr A. C. Mathe.son acted as director of i tire sports, and to him and the courteous ! secretary, Mr F. Fanthorpe, is the sue* cess of the gathering due. to great extent. They were ably assisted by Messrs W. Condor, J. Olipliant and A. J. Pettigrew : as judges of the running events ; Messrs A. Hainbridgu and K. Hell judges of the wrestling, Mr J. 11. Richardson and E. i Palmer judges of jumping ; Mr W. Mor- j ton treasurer; other members of tho committee who assisted in addition to j those mentioned were Messrs F. Gherkc ■ and T. M. Jackson. Mr P. Thomson ' acted as starter aud got the men away ' well together. IVlessrs J, and W. Waugh i acted as judges of the piping aud dancing : and uave genera! satisfaction. The pro cecrhogs were enlivened by the Apiti Band under bandmaster E. Cnrreeu | Refreshments were provided on the j ground by Mr Harrison, of tho Birmingham Hotel. It is expected the sports will result iv a substantial credit balance. Below arc the results. Mullin entered a protest against Moughan, whom it was alleged had scut in incorrect performances. Mongbfin admitted having done so, but stated it was unintentional and be was, accordingly, disqualified, Mullin getting the second and Derungs the third prizes. A Wilson, who ynessed 63 pounds, the exact weight of the pig, secured the prize. Thero were 35 guesses, and the nexft nearest were— Joseph Sbapleski, W Banks, nnd Mrs F Fanthorpe, who each guessed H3Jlb, while Mr H L Sherwill guessed 62 and 64.
