Manchester Road Board.

o The ordinary monthly meeting of the Manchester Road Board was held on Saturday last. Present — Messrs F. Y. Lethbridge (chairman), G. Wheeler, D. Thomas, and W. G. Pearce. Correspondence was received and dealt with as follows : — From J. A. Macdonald, contractor for dog tax collecting for 1896, applying for a refund of deposit. From M. Henaghan, asking the Board to metal twelve and a half chains of road opposite his property. From John Macfarlane. stating that he could not start his contract on Wilson's road for a time as be bad another job on hand and he would, therefore, abandon the contract. From W. F. Jacob, on behalf of the local bodies conference sub-committee appointed to draw up bye-laws regulating traffic on the roads, stating that said committee were prepared to submit a report to a future meeting of the con ference and suggesting that the date be fixed by the Board. From Gardner Bros., objecting to Mr Cotter being granted permission to erect swing gates on road. From Gay and Haggitt, solicitors for Messrs Gardner Bros., objecting to the notice given by Mr Cotter of his intention to apply for permission to erect gates on road line. Mr Gardner waited on the Board in support of the objections to Mr Cotter being granted permission to erect gates. Mr H. S. Fitzherbert, solicitor, waited on the Board in support of Mr Cotter's application and pointed out that permission hid already b°en granted for the erection of the gates, but such permission was given before the Act had been complied with by Mr Cotter giving due notice by advertisement, and it was for the Board to now pass a resolution, the necessary notice having been given, allowisg Mr Cotter to erect nine gates on the road through his property, and he suggested that no time limit be specified. Mr Cotter was only asking what he was legally entitled to. It was the opinion of members that it would be better if both pa r ties could come to an amicable settlement between themselves. The distance of road affected is between four and five miles. Proposed by Mr Wheeler and seconded by Mr Thomas, That Mr Cotter having failed to advertise before this Board's last meeting, his intentiou to apply for leave to erect nine swing gates across roads through his property, but having done so in the interim, this Board now grant permission, under section 118 of the Public Works Act, 1894, and empower Messrs Lethbridge and Pearce to affix the Board's common seal to this permission : further that it is tile pleasure of the Board that Mr Cotter remove the two gates nearest his home within one month.— Carried. Resolved, That tenders be called for the collection of the Dog Tax for the year 1897 ; sheep and cattle dogs 2s 6d each, other dogs 10s on the same terms as last year. Proposed by Mr Pearce, seconded by Mr Thomas, That the Engineer be instructed to call for tenders widening and regrading Proctor's Hill, Bunny thorpe road ; tenders to be in at next meeting. — Carried. Proposed by Mr Thomas, seconded by Mr Pearce, That tenders be invited for metalling the twelve and a half chains applied for by Mr M. Henaghan, providing Mr Henaghan gives the metal free of charge ; tenders to be in by next meeting. — Carried. Resolved, That the clerk give the information asked for re pound at Asharst as to the cost and what constitutes a pound. Proposed by Mr Wheeler, seconded by Mr Lethbridge, That tenders be called for regrading the hill on Wilson's line and fronting Mr Shannon's house, tenders to be opened and dealt with by Messrs Pearce and Wheeler on Friday, the Bth inst, at noon. Proposed by Mr Pearce, seconded by Mr Thomas, That a meeting of the conference of local bodies re bye-laws be held on Janutty Bth, 1897, at the Manchester Eoad Board Office, Feilding— Proposed by Mr Pearce, seconded by Mr Thomas, That the Inspector notify settlers on Bunnythorpe road to remove all blackberries and sweet briars growing on road opposite their propertiesCarried. The meeting adjourned after passing accounts for payment.
