At the Pioneer Bicycle Club's Interprovincial meeting, the Mile luterprovincial Championship was won by J, O'Sborland, Pioneer ; A. Dorm, Timaru, 2 ; S. McDonald, Dunedin, 3. Time, 2min. 27secs. Shorland also won the Five Mile Handicay from scratch in 12min. 3 4 Gthsecs. The visitors l'_Mile Handicap was won by G. A. Max well, Danedin. The New Zealand chess tourney opened yesterday. Io the first round WV. Anderson (Canterbury) had a draw. Melfor beat Edwards (Otago), Mason beat Cocks i Wellington), Pleasants beat Meldrum (Rangitikei), Barnes beat Grierson (Wellington), Gifi'ord a bye. Dunedin, Dec. 26. Samuel Cowan, a miner, 73 years of age, was found dead in his hut near Macetown last evening. Oamaru, December 27. The s.s. Wakatipu brought about 500 excursionists from Dunedin, and when entering the harbour at dead low water got fast in the mud, and remained there for about an hour and a half till the tide made, when sbe came in. It is said tbat the steamer was out of tbe channel, but this is disputed, at all events according to the leading marks. Wellington, Dec. 27. Qu Friday night the Petone railway station was broken into. The safe was drilled, bnt tbe thieves had not time to open it, and noting w^s stolen.
