(Per Press Association). Melbourne, December 26. According to the Argus, an attempt was made to doctor the pitch in tbe recent match at Adelaide. Since a similar attempt succeeded some years ago, a watchman has been on duty and it was owing to this precaution the present attempt was prevented. The League of Victorian Wheelmen has refused to sanction tbe Lewis- Martin match, which was intended to be run under the auspices of the Melbourne Cycling Club, on the ground that Martin bad already agreed to run a match at the League meeting and they would not allow him to play fast and loose as he liked. Phylloxera is spreading in tbe Bendigo district which will be declared infected, and the viueyards destroyed. This Day. Steady rain was falling at midnight. Hobart, December 24.
