F eilding Borough Council.
INSTALLATION OF MAYOR. A special meeting of tbe Feilding Borough Council was held at noon yesterday for tbe purpose of installing the Mayor-elect, Mr W. A. L. Bailey, as Mayor for the second term. There were present — The Mayor-elect, Crg E. Good* behere. W. G. Shearer, P. Thompson, G. H. Say welj, and G. W. Fowles. Mr W. A. L. Bailey retired from the chair. After making a few remarks as to the finances of the borough to tbe effect that ' the overdraft was a great deal too large, while they were required to do certain works, notably tbe erection of a bridge in Denbigh street, for which they had a petition in and which deserved consideration as a considerable amounts were collected from this street. Cr Goodbehere was then voted to the chair and he said he had much pleasure in asking Mr Bailey to make the declaration for the second term. He was of opinion a Mayor should hold office for the second year for in the first he obtained a knowledge of the Borough affairs which was of very much more value to the ratepayers than that possessed during his first year in office. Since Mr Bailey had been in the chair the Council bad worked very harmoniously, and he (Mr Goodbehere) congratulated him on his election for a second term. Mr Bailey having made the usual declaration thanked Mr Goodbehere for bis kindly remarks. He thanked the Council lor working bo harmoniously in tbe past and looked back with pleasure upon what they had done. The Warwick street bridge was completed and footpaths bad: been made. They were fortunate in not having floods as had been experienced in Mr Sandilands' term of office. They h«d done considerable work during the past year and would have to do more. They could not go in for a loan for waterworks i for some years, when they might be able to consolidate the existing loans. Cr Goodbehere, touching .on the Mayor's remarks with reference to the overdraft;, said the money had been judiciously spent and they had the benefit of it. Cr Saywell congratulated the Mayor on bis re-election and said be would do his best to assist him in bis duties. Cr Fowles also congratulated the Mayor. A letter was received from Mr Truebridge submitting section .491, facing the railway line and adjacent to Gladstone street, for approval as a site for the gasworks. ... • Councillors thought it desirable to adjourn consideration for a few days t and it was rssolved, on the motion of Cr Saywell and seconded by Cr Shearer, That a meeting of tbe Council be held on Friday night to further consider -the site submitted for approval for the gasworks. Tbe Council then adjourned.
