The Fire on Board the Barque Alice
— o— — — — (Per Press Association.) Wellington, Dec. 12. The barque Alice was onJy insured for about ten thousand dollars. The cargo on board and ready for shipment is insured for about £6000, the youth British and China Traders Offioea having the principal lines. About fifty bales oi' flax were actually destroyed. A large quantity was saturated with water but will be dried. A quantity of deck planking and beams of the vessel were so badly charred tbat they will have to be replaced, and as other repairs also have to be affected, it will be some time before tbe barque is ready for sea. There ia a difference of opinion between the officers of tbe vessel and the agenta as to the cause of the outburst. The officers are confident it was the result of spontaneous combustion, and tbe aqenta are equally confident it was caused by a spark. Experts dedare that tbe flax being shipped by the Alice was the best quality that has ever been exported from the colony.
