AUSTRALIANS v. WELLINGTON.
Per Press Association. Wellington, Nov. 14. The match was drawn, but had the Australians closed their innings, they could have won easily. They totalled 286, thanks to the most inefficient fielding. Iredale and Hill took the score to 101 at a fairly rapid rate, but the former, who was let off twice, played very stead ily, and aiso Hill, but in a more powerful aud attractive style. Gift'eu was slow afc first, but woke up when Trott came in, but then relapsed into a patient groove. He was lame and had a man to run for him. He was missed once. Trott was missed three times in miking 14, being eventually caught off a skier. Trumble plaj-ed carefully, acd at the end Jones banged the bowling about with a horizontal bat. The followiug are the principal scores:--Giffen 38, Iredale 33, Hill 30, Trumble 19, Jones 19, Trott 14. Smith, who was the chief sufferer by the mistakes in the field, got 3 wickets for 55. Upham 3 for 71, Ashbolt 2 for 52, Waters 2 for 8, The latter's two wickets were catches off very bad balls. There were two hours left for the local men to get 230 in. Jones and Trott bowled. Some of the early players made a fair show for a short time, but Trott then began to tumble the wickets over with curly leg breaks one after the other. Williams alone held out, and he was mostly opposite Jones, to whose fast ones he stood up well. Eventually he was caught and bowled by him for 18, and this was the only wicket Jones got. Benbow and Hickson made a stand and saved the game by putting on 25. the total being 108 for 14 wickets Hickson 16, Tucker 13, Clayton 13, Benbow (not out) 12. Trott secured 9 wickets for 54, Jones 1 for 20, Trumble 1 for 40, McKibben 3 for 13. The local Association made a profit of about £50, the attendance to-day heing good.
