CYCLONES, STORMS and FLOODS. ! SHOCKING LOSS OF LIFE. i GREAT DISTRUCTION OF I PROPERTY. Per Press Association. AUCKLAHD. NOV. 5. | August, September, and October in ] 1896 carry a record of some of the most terrible disasters by flood and fires that have occurred for many years. Kobe, in Japan led off in August 26th with conflagrations, floods, storms and earthquakes, involving the loss of a hundred lives and a million of money. The disaster is unprecedented in the history of the Makado's dominions. In the Gifn Prefecture 4300 homes were blown down, and along the Haajiga river 400 persons lost their lives. Several storms occurred in August 30 along the Isatsugawa river 84 lives were lost. At Kobe, a fire had devastated the city, 40 people were swept to their death by a flood. Tbe loss of life reached 2500. The great flood was preceded by an earthquake. Then followed a downpour such as never before was experienced on the island European residents were panic stricken and sought shelter on high lands. On September iSOth the city of Staunton, in Shenandoah valley, Virginia, was visited by a flood in which many lives were lost and much property destroyed. On the same date a severe hurricane struck the city of Baltimore, and submerged the northern water front. Vessels were driven from the harbour up to the middle of Pratt strait. On the same date a cyclonic storm visited Lancaster, Shamokori, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and some towns of New Jersey.
In the vicinity of Lancaster the damage will easily reach a million dollars. On October Ist the thriving town of Cedar Key, in Florida, was overwhelmed by tidal waves. Homes were swept away and scores of people were buried beneath the mud. Many fishing vessels foundered on the same date. Part of the town of Benun, Arizona, was destroyed, but the flood from a cloud burst, and six persons were drowned. A wall of water at least twelve miles long was poured into the San Pedro river.
