V.R.C. MEETING.

(Per Press Association.) Melbourne, October 31. Tbo Spring Meeting of the V.R.C. opened to-day, the attendance being quite equal to previous years, and several Governors from neighbouring colonies with their suites were present. Followare the results : — Trial Stakes, 1 mile.

Those were the only starters. Betting — 5 to 4ou Reka, 7to 4 against Canoona, 7to 1 St. David. Canoona finished three lengths away from the leading pair. Time, Imin44sec. Melbourne Stakes, 1 J miles.

Other starters— Preston, Bloodshot, Marusa, Tire, Princess of Wales. Betting—7 to 4 Hopscotch, 8 to 1 against Bloodshot, Marusa, Tire ; 12 to 1 Disfigured. On the barrier being raised Princess of Wales skipped away in front and kept there to half a mile from the home turn when Bloodshot took command, and Mr Stead's cast-off showed the way into the straight, but was immediately challenged by Disfigured and Hopscotch, while Mauser moved up closer. All the way home was a desperate struggle, Disfigured winning by a nose. Time, 2min lO^sec. V.R.C. Dkkby, U miles. Newhaven (Gardner) ... 1 Besolute (Jas. Gough) ... 2 Coil (J. Hayes) 3 Other starters— The Officer, Charge, Bundook, Eleusinian, Sabretache. Betting — 2 to 1 against Newhaven, 3to 1 Resolute, 5 to 1 The Officer, 7 to 1 Coil, 10 to 1 Charge, 16 to 1 Sabretache. 20 to 1, Eleusinian, Bundook. On tbe starter despatching the field the favorite took up the running with Resolute next, and then came Bundook, Eleusinian, The Officer and Sabretache, while Charge was whipping in. By the time tbe riverside was reached Newhaven had drawn three lengths to the front and going very strongly, while Eleusinian had ran up into third position, just between Resolute, Coil and Charge. Along the back stretch tbe favorite increased his lead by six lengths from Resolute, who was being ridden to keep bis position. Then followed Coil and The Officer, while the rear division comprised Eleusinian, Charge, Habretacln;, and Bundook. There was very little change to the home turn, but here Newhaven drew away from his opponents and won in a canter by half a dozen lengths, Coil being half a length behind Resolute, The Officer a head away fourth, Eleusinian fifth, Charge sixth, Bundook seventh, and Sabretache last. Time, 2min 39 sec. Lady Brassey placed the blue ribbon on the winner amidst tremendous cheerins.

Eight others ran. Betting— 4 to 1 against. Won comfortably by three quarters of a length. Time, lmin 4sec.

(Per Press Association ) Melbourne, Nov. 1. This morning Damien put up the fastest 11 furlongs of the season, compassing the distance in 2tnin 29sec. Miraculum was sent a strong mile and a half. Gardiner, the Caulfield jockey, and his wife have drawn Newhaven in Tattersail's big sweep. Newhaven, consequent on his victory, has jumped up first favorite for the chief event on Tuesday, and 5 to 1 is the best offer against him, 100 to 7 others. Though the Derby was apparently won in a canter Newhaven could not have gone much faster, as he ran the last six furlongs in lmin lSjsec.
