Sad Death of Mr F. J. Knox.

Some sensation was caused in town last Saturday evening when it became known that the body of Mr F. J, Knox had been found lying in his house in Manchester street. The deceased, who was a son of the late Dr Knox (one of the earliest settlers of Wellington) had been a resident of Feilding for many years. Deceased was well known throughout the Manawatu-Eangitikei disti'ict, and though of eccentric habits, was highly esteemed for his honesty and straightforward conduct by those who knew him. Deceased was a bachelor, and had resided by himself in Manchester street for the last ten years. The late Mr Knox was possessed of considerable literary ability, and was a frequent contributer to the columns of the local press. He has a brother residing at Turakina. Some months ago Mr Knox had a fit in the reading room in the Municipal Chambers, and since then his health had been gradually failing. He was last seen on Monday evening, October 12th. On Saturday evening Messrs T. j H. James and A. R. Curtis, while proceed- ! ing home, decided to examine deceased's premises. A glance through the bedroom window convinced them that deceased was either ill or dead. An axe was procured and the door forced open. Messrs Curtis. James and A. G. Carty entered, and found the unfortunate man's body resting on a stretcher, his feet touching the floor, and his back leaning against I the wall. His clothing consisted of a shirt and collar only. He had been either | dressing or undressing, and while doing so was evidently seized with a fit, which terminated fatally. The police were at once communicated with, and Constable Tuohy and Dr Johnston visited the premises when aa inspection of the body and the contents of the house was made. Deceased, who was 58 years of age, apparently had been dead for several days. We understand the body of the late Mr Knox will be conveyed by train to Turakina this evening for interment in the cemetery there.
