THIS DAY.
Accused was again under examination, chiefly as to his reason for assisting the girl to leave home ; in cross examination by the police he Baid the reason for his having gone after the girl was because he was afraid she would go astray on the road to Carterton, and he, therefore, suggested she should go to Wanganui. In cross-examination by Mr Sandilands, accused said : It was about 12 or 14 days before the girl went away that it was arranged she should goto Carterton ; his object in going after the girl was to take her to Wanganui to his wife. Mrs Wahle gave evidence of the movements of the girl and accused at Waituna, but it was of an unimportant nature. In cross-examination by Mr Sandilands, witness said she understood from Mary Robinson that the latter intended to go to Carterton on account of the illtreatment she had received at home. After retiring for a few minutes to consider the evidence, the Bench said they felt there was just sufficient evidence to compel them to send accused up for trial, which would be at the next sitting of the Supreme Court at Wanganui, on the 21st instant.
