THAT MILLION. o

The manly course adopted by the Legislative Council in declining to accept the new Million Loan Bill without an intelligible schedule, is meeting with general favor in the eyes of colo nists, especially of those who dread the consequences of a policy of reckless squandering on the eve of a general election. They have taken up a position which is quite tenable, because they " only ask for information " before passing tbe Bill. Although it may be pieaded that the Bill was passed by a majority in the House of Representatives, yet we have a strong suspicion that many of those who voted for the measure did so under compulsion with the miserable consciousness that they thereby violated the solemn pledges made to their constituents at the last elections to follow only a "non-borrowing and self reliant policy." These "jelly fish " individuals will doubtless be glad in their hearts that there exi&ts a bare possibility of a loop hole of escape, given them by the stronger backed members of the Legislative Council. But whether the Bill is passed or not they must still bear the odium. However, as the Treasurer roust have money we confidently predict that the Council will receive all the particulars asked for, and the money will be subsequently "tar-branded" in a way to satisfy both of the high contending parties. It would be too much to expect the Council to throw out the Bill altogether, but if they did do bo they would certainly deserve well of their country, inasmuch as the general elections would thereby be precipitated and we would witness the interesting

spectacle of a Ministry which thrust ! itself into power on a non-borrowing policy " going to the country " on a policy diametrically opposite.
