(Per Preijs Association.! Napier, This Day. Obituary— T. C. Newton, one of the oldtst Hawke's Bay settlers. He arrived in Otago in 1849. Tbe Licensing Committee recommend an amendment in the Act giving the chairman power to issue conditional licenses and temporary transfers in order to obviate the necessity of two members of the committee being present when such application s are dealt with. Alastertox, This Daj\ The branch of' the National Association strongly ur^ed Mr W. H. Beetham to come forward as a enndidate. The meeting was adjourned for a week to enable Mr Beetham to consider the request. Dunkdin, Sept. 2. The funeral of the Rev. Father Newport, drowned at Port Chalmers, took place to-day and was largely attended. Auckland, This Day. There -were lively scenes at the Women's Political League. Nineteen members resigned. They stated it was a protest against tbe tactics at the election of officers. Recriminative charges were bandied about. About i' 16,000 cash was remitted today from England to Auckland on account of mine purchases, £5000 for working capital.
