Bombardment of Zanzibar.
■ v (Per Press Association. 1 Zanzibar, August 28 Mr Cave, British Consul, has proclaimed Hamud, an elderly cousin of the late monarch, Sultan of Zanzibar. The gunboats Thrush ancl Racoon were repeatedly hit by tbe rebel fire, but received little damage, only one sailor being wounded. The rebels fought pluckily and lost heavily. Khaled bolted early in the engagement. August 29. Hammond expresses friendship to the British and declare that the status is unaltered. Annexation would involve immediate abolition of slavery, which is not desired. The natives lost hundreds 1 in the recent trouble.
