♦ . - (Per Press Association.) Wellington, August 18. It is stated that Mr H. D. Bell will not seek re-election for the city, and that Sir Robert Stout, J. Dutbie, and A. S. Menteath will stand in the interest of the Opposition. Mr A. R. Atkinson is likely to be a candidate for the city. Mr Fisher intends to stand for Wellington as an Independent candidate and not in conjunction with anyone else. The arrivals in the colony in June were 981 and departures 1275 ; arrivals in July were 1072, departures 1050. A satisfactory test of beef thawed by the process invented by Mr Peck took place at the Gear Meat Co.'c premises before a number of M's.H.R. and others. Gisborne, August 19. At Jerusalem, near Awanui, an old Maori named Pita Ronga was burned to death in bis whare. The jury returned a verdict of accidentally burned to death by his whare catching fire. A native named Tubaka Houkamau was killed while falling bush at Matahua on the East Coast by a tree falling on him. Auckland, Angusfc 19. Judge Conolly delivered judgment today in the case of the Farmers' Co-opera-tive Association v. A. B. Newman, claim L 260 commission on the sale of property. The Judge held that the plaintiff company had brought the parties together. He held that the plaintiffs were entitled to a commission of 1 per cent on L 26.000 in accordance with the authority given by the defendant. Judgment was given for plaintiff for L 260, with costs according to scale. On the application of Mr Finn, counsel for the defendant, the proceedings were stayed for 14 days pending notice of appeal. Dunedin, Augus 18. Mr Justice Williams gave judgment to day in the claim of Charles Swan wick for the delivery to him by the Official Assignee of flour bought from John Ryley, or payment for the same. Swanwick, a baker at Lawrence, purchased about 50 tons of flour from John Ryley for delivery. He paid for the whole and bad received about ten tons, when Ryley filed his petition in bankruptcy. Swan* wick thereupon claimed delivery of the balance from the Official Assignee, who refused, holding that the flour was not, at the time of salt, in the order and diiposition ot the bankrupt. The Judge made an order that Swanwick was en* titled to the return of the money he had paid. L 865 15s, with costs. No intereit was allowed. Wanganui, August 18 The Rev. L. M.
