AUSTRALIAN CABLES.
AN IMPORTANT JUDICIAL DECIBION, THE NEW MELBOURNE WATERWORKS. (Per Press Association.) Melbourne, August 16. A novel in come tax has just been decided by Justice Williams. The appellant was the widow of a former officer of a Melbourne Company. After the death of her husband the company was incorporated, and in the articles of association there was a provision to pay the widow L3OO per annum for ten yearp. Tbe Commissioner assessed the allowance as an income, and a police magistrate confirmed tha assessment. Mr Justice Williams ruled that the allowance was a pure act of benevolence on which the widow had no legal claim, and was not taxable. The formal opening by the Governor of the Happy Valley Waterworks marked an important event in the history of the colony. It was celebrated by an imposing demonstration. The work was commenced early in 1892, and finished at a total cost of a little over half a million. The source of tbe supply is the Onkaparinga river in the Mount Lofty Ranges. The storage reservoir is capable of holding three thousand million gallons, and and will discharge a million gallons daily. Sydney, This Day. There is still about £3000 worth of gold to be recovered from the Catterthun.
