The generosity of Miss Edith Walker* of New South Wales, will result in a team of four mounted riflemen proceeding to England to compete in the tournaments there. Miss Walker donated 1:320 out of the i'4oo required for the purpose. Three of those who met with accidents on Monday night at the Marton Theatre, through the collapse of stairway at the Theatre— Mrs Theed, Mr F. R. Bishop, and Master Gilbert Armstrong — are progressing favorably towards recovery. - Mercury. A young man named Dave McEwen, a resident of Palmerston, had his leg broken while bushfelling beyond Hun terville on Wednesday. He was brought down by yesterday's train from Hunterville, and forwarded on to his home by the Palmerston train. A fatal accident occurred at Ngapara (Oamaru) on Saturday by which Mr John Todd, of that township lost his life. The unfortunate man was out shooting, and while dragging his gun through a fence, about a mile and a half from the township, the trigger caught, and the piece exploding, blew the top of his head off. Rough on the ladies ! The chairman of the Temperance meeting, on Monday night, expressed the opinion that if the young ladies of Masterton were on one side of the river and the young men on the other, half of the ladies would be drowned. Does this not show the necessity for the establishment of swimming baths '? A London paper states that there is much trepidation among bicycle makers in England over reliable reports that the American manufacturers had decided to cut down the prices of machines by one quarter. If this is done, the English makers will also have to come down, and, of course, the benefit will wheel right out here to us. Very soon we may get the £20 machine for £15. The Feilding Golf Club are sending a team of four to play Colonel Gorton's team the return match at Raugitikei tomorrow. The Feilding Club will be represented by C. 11. Coote, H. P. Lance, S. Strachau aud C. A. J. Levett. A match is bting arranged between the Manawatu and Feilding Clubs for Saturday 15tb, ou the Feilding links. The District Court was opened yesterday morning and formally adjourned until the 20th instant. A large number of shareholders were present from all parts of the district in connection with the list of contributories in tue Longburu Freezing Company. After the adjournment of the Court the persons present, many of whom had come long distances, met at Messrs Abraham and Williams' Far- , mer's room, where the situation was discussed. — Standard. A suggestion Las been ras.de by a practical man which appears to be a good one. It is this — that the Government should select men from the unemployed who are able to fell busb, and send them upon the Crown lands, where they could use the axe iv felling, burning and logging ap. The increased value of the land, after being cleared, would pay for the labor spent upon it, and many of the unemployed, who are bow a worry to the State, would have work.— Wairarapa Star. The Government have brought down the Juvenile Depravity Suppression Bill. Under its provisions, when a constable finds a girl loitering about the streets after 10 p.m. for an apparently improper purpose, he shall have her examined as to name, abode, and parentage, aud then take her home, and baud her over to the person in chaiL'e. It' he finds her again, he shall take hoc to the police stution, and it uo satisfactory excuse is forthcoming, the Magistrate shall send her to an industrial school or otherwise deal with her.
