At a meeting of the School Committees Conference it was decided not to express an opinion on the Bible-reading in schools question, which the Conference thought should be decided by referendum. A resolution was carried that corporal punishment other tban on the band should not be inflicted except in extreme cases, and then only by the head- master, and that in tbe case of girls no corporal punishment whatever should be inflicted, unless under very exceptional ciraumstances.
