In the High Court of Justice to-day, before the Lord Chief Justice (Baron Pollock) and Mr Justice Hawkins, Dr Jameson, Sir John Willouphby, Colonel j Grey, Colonel White and Captain C. J. i Coventry, officers of the expedition into the Transvaal which led to the battle of Krugersdrop, were found guilty of making war agaiust a Foreign State then at peace with England. July 29. At Jameson's trial, Sir C. Russell urged the main question was — Were defendants engaged in the military expedition against the Transvaal ? The jury found accused guilty on all counts, but added a rider that the excited state of Johannesburg at the time presented great provocation. Jameson was sentenced to 15 months' imprisonment, Willoughby 10, Major White 7, Grey, White, and Coventry, 5. None of the sentences carry with them bard labor. As well as those mentioned Colonel White was sentenced to five months. A Parliamentary Committee has been appointed ito enquire into tbe chnn^es desirable in the government of the Chartered Company's territory. Mr Hawkesley, solicitor to the Chartered Company, in a letter to the press, states he informed the Treasury that Mr Rhodes was ready to stand his trial in London. The Times considers this assurance need not cause surprise, as virtually Mr Rhodes had no option. His position, however, differs from thoso whose sentences were commuted, as Mr Rhodes had committed no overt act, though he might be privy to the acts of others.
