AUSTRALIANS v. DERBYSHIRE.

(Per Press Association.) LiOndon, July 20. The Australians began a match with Derbyshire to-day, the Home team being — Chatterton, Bagshaw, Davidson, Sugg, Hulme, Porter, Storer, Evershed, Wriglet, Marsden, and Purely. Tr unable, Kelly, and Jones stand out of the Colonial team. The weather is splendid, and the wicket in first-class order. The attendance is good. The Australians, winning the toss, decided to bat, and at 2 p.m. had lo9t one wicket for 134 run3— Giffen, 63 ; Iredale, not out. 66. The Press are unanimous in praising the form shown by the Australians in the j recent test match. The Times has ad- , vised that no efforts should be spared to obtain a team to worthily represent England in the final test match. The Standard considers the visitors have shown unusual ability at all points of the game.

At the conclusion of the second test match the Australians had scored 7563 runs during the present season, against 5885 runs recorded by the Englishmen — a difference in favor of the Australians of 1678. The Australians have scored over 300 five times ; over 400 four times ; and over 500 once. On one occasion only have 300 runs been scored by any English team against the Australians — 305 in the second test match. Both the lowest— lß against M.C.C.,andthe highest 584— against Leicestershire, number of runs scored in any one innings by either side have been recorded by the Australians. A cablegram of a congratulatory character was yesterday sent from Wellington to Mr G. H. S. Trott, captain of the Australian eleven.
